La chasse-galerie. Ma légende préférée. En voici un bref résumé...

Il s'agit de l'histoire de bûcherons de la Gatineau qui font un pacte avec le diable afin de faire voler un canot pour qu'ils puissent rendre visite à leurs femmes. Il devront cependant éviter de blasphémer durant la traversée, ne point heurter le canot aux clochers d'une église et être de retour avant six heures le lendemain matin. Dans le cas contraire ceux-ci perdraient leurs âmes. (Wiki) Évidemment, j'ai un peu écourté la légende en français, puisque tout le monde ici la connaît... :)

The "Chasse-Galerie" is one of my fave legend. Here is what it tells...

After a night of heavy drinking on New Year's Eve, a group of "voyageurs" (pioneers) working at a remote timber camp want to visit their sweethearts some 100 leagues away (300 miles). The only way to make such a long journey and be back in time for work the next morning is to run the "chasse-galerie". Running the "chasse-galerie" means making a pact with the Devil so that their canoe can fly through the air to their destination with great speed. However, the travelers must not mention God's name or touch the cross of any church steeple as they whisk by in the flying canoe. If either of these rules are broken during the voyage, then the Devil will have their souls. To be safe, the men promise not to touch another drop of rum to keep their heads clear. The crew take their places in the canoe which then rises off the ground, and they start to paddle. Far below they see the frozen Gatineau River, many villages, shiny church steeples and then the lights of Montreal. The bewitched canoe eventually touches down near a house where New Year's Eve festivities are in full swing. No one wonders at the trappers'/loggers' sudden arrival. They are embraced with open arms and soon are dancing and celebrating as merrily as everyone else. Soon it is late and the men must leave if they are to get back to camp in time for work. As they fly through the moonless night, it becomes apparent that their navigator had been drinking as he steers the canoe on a dangerously unsteady course. While passing over Montreal they just miss running into a church steeple, and soon after the canoe end up stuck in a deep snowdrift. At this point the drunken navigator begins swearing and taking the Lord's name in vain. Terrified the Devil will take their souls, the men bind and gag their friend and elect another to steer. The navigator soon breaks his bonds and begins swearing again. The crew become more and more shaken at the possibility of losing their souls, and they eventually steer the bewitched canoe right into a tall pine. The men spill out and are knocked unconscious (or pass out). Notably the ending of the story changes from version to version. Sometimes the men are condemned to fly the canoe through hell and appear in the sky every New Year's Eve, but in other versions all, or all but one, escape the terms the Devil made. (Wiki)

TOUT CHANGE...AS LIFE GOES ON...

2008 aura été une mauvaise année... Tout a commencé par l'AVC de maman, en janvier. Ma petite soeur a ensuite appris qu'elle perdrait en décembre le local où elle exerçait le métier d'antiquaire du livre. Mon beau chat Merlin est mort en octobre et finalement j'ai appris que je souffrais d'une maladie chronique et débilitante. Une année de merde! Sans compter que l'hiver 2007-2008 a été infernal avec ses 554 cm de neige. Et qu'il a plu tout l'été...
Mais 2008 est terminée! Bon débarras!
Maman ne bouge plus aussi facilement, mais elle a survécu à son AVC. Merlin me manque toujours, mais j'ai adopté Chausson, qui met beaucoup de joie dans la maison. J'apprends à accepter ma maladie. De toute façon, je vis avec depuis l'âge de 25 ans. Ça s'appelle la spondylite ankylosante. Et maintenant, je ne me fais plus dire que "c'est dans la tête"..... Je prends des médicaments qui m'aident beaucoup!
Quant à ma petite soeur, elle a enfin trouvé le local qui lui convient. Beaucoup plus grand que le précédent, elle peut maintenant y mettre beaucoup plus de choses. Mes photos, par exemple.... et les tableaux de nos amis peintres. ses propres oeuvres et éventuellement, les miennes!.. Hhehehehe.... :)
Aujourd'hui, je veux vous montrer ce nouveau local...

2008 has been a bad year... All began in January with my mom's stroke. Then my sis has been told that she would have to quit the local she has been renting for 18 years now. There she was selling old books and antiques. My nice cat Merlin died in October and I have learned that I was suffering from a chronic disease called spondylitis ankylosing, a form of arthritis of the spine and hips. A frakking year! And Winter 2007-2008 has been shit with it's 18 feet of snow! And we had a very rainy Summer... And blah blah blah...

But this year is over! OUT! Go hang yourself, 2008!

Now..... Mommy does not move as easily as she used to, but at 84, she at least has survived her stroke. I still miss my Merlin but I have adopted Monsieur Chausson. He's funny and makes us laugh a lot! I'm learning to accept my disease. After all, I had that since I was 25.... And now, nobody can tell me that it's all in my head... I take Celebrex twice a day and feel a bit better.

And Clo has finally found a nice local. It has a lot more space than the previous one. She can put there all her books, postcards, vintage illustrations, posters..... and more! She has nice walls to hang some of my friends paintings, her own, and eventually, mine! :) Hheheheheheh!

Now, let me show you this nice new bookshop!

Avec l'aide d'amis, Claudine a finalement réussi à placer tous ses livres. L'ouverture officielle s'est faite le 14 février. Claudine avait fait un bon punch au vin rouge.... *hips". Même Geneviève y a goûté... et regoûté.... :)

Je souhaite à Clo tout le succès possible dans sa nouvelle entreprise.

With some helping friends, Claudine finally managed to put all her books on the shelves. She officially opened her store on February the 14th. There was a good punch made with red wine. Even Geneviève took a few sips... well, many sips! :) *hips*

I wish Claudine all the success she deserves in her new antique bookshop.

CHATS ENCORECATS AGAIN

Contrairement à l'année dernière, l'hiver a commencé plutôt doucement. Ensuite, nous avons eu quelques tempêtes qui ont ajouté pas mal de neige au sol, mais beaucoup moins qu'en 2007-2008. Depuis quelques jours, nous connaissons une vague de froid intense. La température du jour ne dépasse pas -20°C (moins 4°F) et baisse durant la nuit à moins 38°C (-36F). Ajouter à celà le facteur vent et vous comprendrez que la Sibérie, à côté, c'est de la petite bière... :) Mais les journées sont tellement belles et ensoleillées!

Last year, we had a difficult Winter, but this year, it began slowly. Then we had a few snowstorms wich added snow to the ground, less than in 2007-2008 though. For many days now, the cold is very...cold! The temperature during the day is never over minus 20°C (-4°F) and drops at night to minus 38°C (minus 36°F). With the wind chill, you'll understand that Siberia seems warm to us.... :) But the days are so sunny!

Chausson a connu sa première neige, puisqu'il n'a que 10 mois! Il était fasciné pas ces petites choses blanches tombant du ciel. Mignon!

Chausson has seen his first snow, since he's only 10 months old! He was all excited to see all those little white things falling from the sky. Cute!

Geneviève, bien sûr, adore Chausson! C'est un chat charmant qui adore jouer!
