Après avoir traversé la spectaculaire Esplanade Riel, on se retrouve dans le Vieux St-Boniface, coeur de la culture française à Winnipeg. Cet endroit est également le foyer de la plus grande communauté francophone à l'Ouest des Grands Lacs. La ville de Saint Boniface fut établie en 1818 quand l'Église Catholique romaine de Québec décida d'établir une mission afin de satisfaire les besoins culturels et religieux des habitants Français et Métis de ce coin de pays.

Pass over the spectacular Esplanade Riel Pedestrian Bridge, we found ourselves in Old Saint Boniface, the heart of Winnipeg's French culture and home to the largest francophone community west of the Great Lakes. Saint Boniface was first settled in 1818 when the Roman Catholic Church in Quebec established a mission to meet the cultural and religious needs of the colony's French and Metis inhabitants.

La cathédrale originale fut construite en 1908, mais fut détruite par le feu en 1968. Les murs encore debout furent incorporés dans le design de la nouvelle église, créant ainsi une dramatique façade orientée vers l'ouest de la Rivière Rouge et faisant face à Winnipeg.

The original cathedral, build in 1908, was destroyed by fire in 1968. The remaining walls were incorporated into the design of the new church, creating a dramatic facade facing west across the Red River toward downtown Winnipeg.
